Night Sky Pilot Project

New street lights in three Lewes neighborhoods are designed to light the street, not the sky.

The Lewes Board of Public Works (BPW) is helping the City install new street light fixtures as part of the Night Sky Pilot Project, an initiative to improve outdoor lighting while reducing unwanted light pollution.

What’s changing and why

The new fixtures reduce light trespass (light spilling onto neighboring properties) and cut down on glare in three ways.

  • Light distribution control

Fixtures direct light downward onto the street and sidewalk, not outward or upward.

  • Warmer color temperature

Softer, less harsh light that’s easier on the eyes and on nocturnal wildlife.

  • Shielding

Physical shields keep direct light out of windows and yards, helping preserve dark skies.

Share your feedback

Each new fixture has a QR code that links to a short survey. We encourage all Lewes residents to scan it and tell us about glare, visibility, and your overall satisfaction.

The survey is open through November. Your input will help guide adjustments during the pilot phase.

You can also take the survey online for your neighborhood:
